Francine is an ambitious, talented speechwriter without a major win on her résumé. In a desperate effort for relevance she’s attached herself to Penelope (Penny) Easter, a long-shot candidate for a vaguely defined position in the Nebraska state government. She is a fun creation, a faux-folksy former professional roller skater who seemingly has gotten into politics to escape middle-age. But when she surges in popularity following a go-for-broke speech, Francine embarks on a wild ride of professional and personal upheaval as she fights to push her client onto the national stage. The Totalitarians is a viciously funny vivisection of the farcical frenzy that is American politics.

Francine ist eine ehrgeizige, talentierte Redenschreiberin mit einem bis dato bescheidenem Lebenslauf. In einem letzten, verzweifelten Versuch in ihrer Karriere doch noch durchzustarten, wird sie in Nebraska Wahlkampagnenleiterin für den politischen Underdog Penelope (Penny) Easter. Penny ist eine ehemalige professionelle Skaterin, bodenständig aber schräg, die mit ihrer Kandidatur ihrer Midlife-Crisis zu entfliehen sucht. Nach einer furiosen Rede steigt ihre Popularität kometenhaft und katapultiert auch Francine in eine aufregende Zukunft – die große politische Bühne immer im Blick. 
The Totalitarians ist eine bissig-komische Karikatur des absurden Wahnsinns, der den Alltag amerikanischer Politik bestimmt.
