After witnessing the accidental murder of his mother‘s lover by his father, young Tommy is so traumatized that he becomes deaf, dumb and blind. As his life goes on, he suffers abuse from friends and relatives, including his parents, who try a number of methods to restore Tommy’s senses (including conventional medicine and hard drugs).
Tommy‘s life is saved, however, when his cousin jokingly puts him in front of a pinball machine, and his natural skills transform him into a “pinball wizard”. After being spontaneously healed, he begins to teach others of his unique perspective on life, eventually becoming a cult idol.
