The Black Rider: The Casting of the Magic Bullets
12th July – 24th July 2014
Hell of a deal with the Devil.
Based on the German folktale that inspired Carl Maria von Weber ‘s nineteenth century opera Der Freischutz, The Black Rider is a tale about Wilhelm, an intellectual young clerk who must learn to hunt in order to marry his true love, a woodsman’s daughter. He strikes a Faustian pact with the Devil for magic bullets that never miss their mark, but in the world of The Black Rider, nothing is what it seems: the devil sings, animals talk, the walls become woods and bullets have a mind of their own.
This homage to German Expressionism is a delirious journey through a vivid theatrical landscape dotted with the signposts of vaudeville, cabaret, circus, and opera.
The Black Rider is an English Theatre DramaClub production.
„This nastily funny adaptation of Carl Maria von Weber’s folk opera, “Der Freischutz,” it is an exceptionally lively, visually captivating entertainment.“ New York Times
