The Picture of Dorian Gray is the story of one beautiful, innocent young man‘s seduction, moral corruption, and eventual downfall. And, oh yeah: it‘s also the story of a really creepy painting. Set in the Victorian London, the story follows a handsome, young Dorian Gray whose portrait is painted by a close friend. Disturbed that his physical beauty will deteriorate with age, Dorian wishes for a Faustian exchange whereby he will retain his beauty but the picture will age. His wish granted, the picture rather than the man degrades as he pursues a life of hedonism and debauchery, reminding him that though his looks are unscathed, his soul is not. Can he still have salvation or is his soul trapped in the doomed painting?
The Picture of Dorian Gray erzählt von Verführung, Verderben und Untergang. Im viktorianischen London wird der gut aussehende, unschuldige, junge Dorian Gray von einem Freund porträitiert. Das Gemälde weckt in Dorian Gray die Angst vor seiner Vergänglichkeit. Um diesem Schicksal zu entgehen, lässt er sich auf einen Pakt mit dem Teufel ein: an seiner Statt soll das Gemälde altern. Seinem Wunsch entsprechend verändert die Zeit das Bild zusehends, während er selbst unverändert ein ausschweifendes, hedonistisches Leben führt. Doch während seine Schönheit unversehrt weiterbesteht, bleibt seine Seele nicht unberührt. Kann es für ihn Erlösung geben oder ist seine Seele für immer in seinem Bildnis gefangen?
