The English Theatre Frankfurt must remain in the Gallileo building in the heart of Frankfurt

The English Theatre Frankfurt (ETF) is the largest English-language theatre on the European continent and a cultural beacon for Frankfurt – Germany’s most international city – and far beyond.

Its presence in the Gallileo building is now threatened if the building’s owner (CapitaLand) and its main tenant (Commerzbank AG) cannot agree on an extension to the theatre’s lease.

We are therefore calling on all of Frankfurt’s and Hesse’s politicians and citizens, as well as the ETF’s friends, supporters, and colleagues, to do everything they can to ensure the theatre remains in the Gallileo building. That means: extending the theatre’s lease, regardless of whether Commerzbank sublets the space to the ETF or CapitaLand lets it directly!

Das English Theatre Frankfurt kämpft um seinen Erhalt im Gallileo-Turm im Herzen Frankfurts

Das English Theatre Frankfurt (ETF) ist das größte englischsprachige Theater in Kontinentaleuropa und kultureller Leuchtturm für Frankfurt – der internationalsten Stadt Deutschlands – und weit darüber hinaus.

Aber die Spielstätte im Schoße des Gallileo-Turms ist nun in Gefahr, wenn sich dessen Eigentümer (CapitaLand) und Hauptmieter (Commerzbank AG) über eine Verlängerung des Mietvertrags mit dem ETF nicht einig werden.

Wir appellieren an die Politiker und Bürger in Frankfurt und Hessen sowie Freunde, Unterstützer und Kollegen, sich mit all ihren Kräften für den Erhalt des ETF im Gallileo einzusetzen. Dies bedeutet: die Fortsetzung des Mietverhältnisses, sei es als Untermieter der Commerzbank AG oder als direkter Mieter von CapitaLand!

Background

The ETF was founded in Frankfurt in 1979 and has been at home in the Gallileo building at Willy-Brandt-Platz since 2003. At that time, the theatre was built in the basement of the newly constructed tower with the generous support of Dresdner Bank and made available to the ETF free of charge. According to an agreement made with the city of Frankfurt back then, the building’s underground space must be used for cultural purposes. This stipulation applies regardless of who owns the building, as the City of Frankfurt’s Planning Department recently confirmed yet again.

In 2009, Dresdner Bank merged with Commerzbank AG, which became the owner of the Gallileo building – and the ETF’s landlord. Commerzbank has also supported the theatre generously since then. In 2015, six years after acquiring the building, Commerzbank sold it to the investment fund CapitaLand and has been a tenant ever since, subletting to the ETF. The theatre’s lease will now end on 15 April 2023. According to CapitaLand, since Commerzbank has a valid lease for the entire building until January 2024, the ETF cannot sign a new lease with the building’s current owner for that period of time.

What will happen to the theatre between 15 April 2023 and 31 January 2024? And: What will happen from 1 February 2024 onwards?

Hintergrund

Das ETF wurde 1979 in Frankfurt gegründet und ist seit 2003 im Gallileo-Turm am Willy-Brandt-Platz zu Hause. Das Theater wurde damals mit der großzügigen Unterstützung von der Dresdner Bank im Keller des neu errichteten Turms gebaut und dem ETF kostenfrei zur Verfügung gestellt. Gemäß der damaligen städtebaulichen Vereinbarung ist eine kulturelle Nutzung im Untergeschoss des Gallileos vorgeschrieben. Diese Auflage gilt auch für alle nachfolgenden Eigentümer, wie das Planungsdezernat der Stadt Frankfurt erst kürzlich wieder bestätigte.

2009 fusionierte die Dresdner Bank mit der Commerzbank AG, die dadurch Eigentümer des Gallileos wurde – und Vermieter des ETF. Auch die Commerzbank AG unterstützte das Theater seit jeher sehr großzügig. Sechs Jahre später (2015) verkaufte die Bank das Gebäude an den Investmentfond CapitaLand. Die Commerzbank AG ist seitdem Mieter des Gallileos, und das ETF ihr Untermieter. Nun soll dieses Mietverhältnis am 15. April 2023 enden. Da die Commerzbank AG jedoch bis Ende Januar 2024 noch einen bestehenden Mietvertrag für das gesamte Gebäude hat, kann das ETF keinen neuen Vertrag mit dem Eigentümer schließen, so CapitaLand.

Was soll nun mit dem Theater in der Zeit zwischen dem 15. April 2023 und dem 31. Januar 2024 geschehen? Und wie geht es ab dem 1. Februar 2024 weiter?

• to continue renting the space used by the theatre from Commerzbank or CapitaLand.

We call on:

• Commerzbank AG and CapitaLand to find a solution that will allow the theatre to stay;
• politicians in the City of Frankfurt and State of Hessen to support the ETF and do all they can to save and fund the theatre in the Gallileo building;
• our friends, supporters, and colleagues to use their voices and resources on behalf of the ETF so it can remain in its current venue.

Wir fordern:

• die Weiterführung des Mietverhältnisses als Untermieter der Commerzbank AG oder als Mieter von CapitaLand.

Wir appellieren an:

• die Commerzbank AG und CapitaLand, eine Lösung für den Fortbestand zu finden;
• die Politiker der Stadt und des Landes, sich hinter das ETF zu stellen und ihre Instrumente zur Rettung und Finanzierung der Spielstätte im Gallileo zu nutzen;
• unsere Freunde, Unterstützer, Kollegen, ihre Stimmen und Ressourcen für den Erhalt des ETF einzusetzen.

It would be a huge loss!

• The ETF is the largest English-language theatre on the European continent.
• From 2003 (the opening of the Gallileo building) until today, the ETF’s shows have been seen by 1,053,028 people. That does not include special events such as concerts, dance performances, appearances by guest companies, workshops, readings, and talkbacks with artists.
• Before the pandemic, the ETF welcomed 70,000 visitors a year.
• The ETF is aware of its educational mandate: before the pandemic, 16,000 school students attended matinees and evening performances and participated in over 190 workshops.
• In addition to its regular programme, the ETF also organises special events such as the StreitClub with Prof. Nicole Deitelhoff and Prof. Michel Friedmann.

Kann man sich ein Ende dieser Spielstätte wirklich vorstellen?
Der Verlust wäre groß!

• Das ETF ist das größte englischsprachige Theater in Kontinentaleuropa.
• Von 2003 (Einzug in das Galileo) bis heute hat das ETF 1.053.028 Theaterbesucher im Gallileo begrüßt. Sonderveranstaltungen wie Konzerte, Tanzveranstaltungen, Gastspiele, Workshops, Lesungen, Talkbacks mit Künstlern sind darin nicht inkludiert.
• Prä-Corona begrüßte das ETF jährlich 70.000 Besucher.
• Das ETF ist sich seines Bildungsauftrages bewusst: Vor dem Lockdown besuchten 16.000 Schüler Matineen und Abendvorstellungen und nahmen an über 190 Workshops teil.
• Zusätzlich zum „regulären“ Programm präsentiert das ETF auch Veranstaltungen wie den „StreitClub“ mit Prof. Dr. Nicole Deitelhoff und Prof. Dr. Michel Friedman.
